Colleen Waring retired in 2006 from the job of deputy city auditor of Austin, Texas after 23 years in public sector auditing. During her career she served a five-year sentence as director of internal audit for the Texas Youth Commission, which operates the state’s juvenile prisons. She began her government auditing career as a legislative auditor for State of Oklahoma, in 1983.
She currently serves the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA) as a member of the Long-Term Conference Planning Committee. In the past she worked as a member of ALGA’s Board, and as the chair of the Professional Issues Committee. She is now a member of the Board of Regents of the Institute of Internal Auditors and chairs the steering committee over the Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) designation. Before joining the IIA’s Board of Regents, she served on the International Government Relations Committee, which she chaired from 2002 to 2005. In addition, Colleen was a member of the original Steering Committee that developed the Certified Government Audit Professional (CGAP) program.
In addition to her work on various professional organizations, she has co-authored a number of research papers on the audit uses of evaluation and operations research methodologies.
Since retiring, Colleen has expanded her consulting business, training government auditors and managers around the country. The rest of the time she can be found trying to beat back the brush on her farm northeast of Austin.
