John Szabo has been the Senior Attorney for Ethics in the Office of the General Counsel for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission since 1991. He is responsible for managing the agency’s ethics program, which includes counseling and training all personnel on the major laws and regulations on ethics. He also advises senior government officials on ethics issues early in their tenure and prior to their departure.
He served in the White House Counsel’s Office collaborating in the vetting process of Presidential appointees prior to their nomination and confirmation. He works extensively with the Office of Government Ethics–the leading Federal agency in this area–and with ethics officials of most other Federal agencies and those in the private sector. He previously served for ten years as Ethics Counselor for the Department of Veterans Affairs. His Federal service also includes the Department of Justice, ACTION, the Office of Economic Opportunity, and the United States Senate. He chairs the ethics panel for the Howard County, Maryland, Board of Education.
Mr. Szabo received his bachelor’s degree, with distinction, from Georgetown University and his law degree from George Washington University. He has received numerous awards for his legal and ethics service, including the NRC’s Meritorious Service Award.
