John Stoxen is the Director of Business Conduct and Compliance for 3M Company, a diversified
technology company that manufactures more than 50,000 products serving many markets, including
industrial, consumer, transportation, health care, and display and graphics. Almost 60 percent of 3M's
79,000 employees are located outside the United States in international subsidiaries 3M has set up in 65
countries. 3M has annual sales of $26 billion.
Located at 3M's global headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota, John is responsible for the design and
implementation of 3M's business global conduct program. This includes policy creation, communications
and training, risk assessment, and creating programs that help 3M management fulfill its responsibility to
maintain and build 3M's ethical culture. In addition, John's department reviews allegations of business
conduct violations, manages the investigation ofthose allegations, and ensures that consistent and
appropriate corrective and disciplinary actions are taken in response to substantiated violations.
John works with 3M's board audit committee, executive-level Business Conduct Committee, top business
and functional leadership, and a network of more than 120 part-time ethics officers located throughout
3M's global organization.
John received his B.A. degree from the University of North Dakota in 1983, and his J.D. from Notre
Dame Law School in 1987. After several years in private law practice focusing on employment law, John
joined 3M in 1993. Before beginning his current assignment in 2003, John served as corporate
employment law counsel and as general counsel to several 3M divisions.
